Chance of Auroras Increases Friday and Saturday Nights

Be prepared to stay up late and look north!

The Northern Lights, also known as the aurora borealis, may be visible in western Washington on Friday and Saturday nights, according to the University of Washington Department of Atmospheric Sciences. The best viewing times will be between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

The Northern Lights are caused by the interaction of charged particles from the sun with the Earth's magnetic field. These particles are drawn to the magnetic poles, where they collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, causing them to emit light.

The Northern Lights are typically only visible in high-latitude regions, such as Alaska and Canada. However, they can sometimes be seen in lower latitudes during periods of high solar activity. This weekend's geomagnetic storm is expected to produce strong auroras that may be visible as far south as Washington state.

If you want to see the Northern Lights, find a dark location with a clear view of the northern sky. Be patient, as it may take some time for the auroras to appear. And don't forget to dress warmly, as it can be cold outside at night.
