Edwin Díaz Gives Up Grand Slam as Fading Mets Lose 8-5

Another blown save in Arizona

Struggles continue for New York

Edwin Díaz gave up a grand slam to Daulton Varsho in the ninth inning, and the New York Mets fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 on Saturday night for their fourth straight loss.

It was the second blown save in three games for Díaz, who has been one of the most reliable closers in baseball over the past few seasons.

The Mets now have lost six of their last eight games and are six games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves in the NL East.

Early lead

The Mets jumped out to an early 2–0 lead in the first inning on a two-run home run by Brandon Nimmo.

New York extended its lead to 3–0 in the third inning on a solo home run by Pete Alonso.

Arizona’s comeback

The Diamondbacks got on the board in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Christian Walker.

Ketel Marte tied the game in the sixth inning with a two-run home run off Mets starter Chris Bassitt.

Late inning struggles

The Mets regained the lead in the seventh inning on a two-run double by Mark Canha.

But the Diamondbacks rallied in the ninth inning against Díaz, who walked the bases loaded with one out and then gave up the grand slam to Varsho.

Injury update

Mets outfielder Starling Marte left the game in the fourth inning with left groin tightness.

Marte is day-to-day with the injury, according to the Mets.

What’s next?

The Mets will wrap up their series against the Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon.

Taijuan Walker will start for the Mets, while Merrill Kelly will start for the Diamondbacks.
