Conservatives Make Gains in Labour Heartlands
The 2019 General Election
The 2019 General Election resulted in a Conservative victory. The party won 365 seats, 48 more than in 2017, and 43.6% of the vote, up from 42.3% in 2017. Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservatives have a majority of 80 seats. They have made gains in Labour heartlands across the country.
Key Gains
The Conservatives have done best in areas in Wales and northern England that voted Leave in the 2016 Brexit referendum. In Wales, the Conservatives gained 14 seats, including the Labour stronghold of Wrexham. In northern England, the Conservatives gained 10 seats, including the Labour stronghold of Wakefield. These gains have helped to give the Conservatives a majority in the House of Commons.
